Nuvia Vaquerano is a lay leader at St. Martin’s Church in Plaistow. She helps with the readings during mass, prepares prayers and leads Bible studies. She volunteers at the church’s food pantry. She is a member of the PCC and acts as their Deanery Synod representative. She also volunteers in a local charity serving warm drinks and as a teaching assistant in a Catholic primary school.

Nuvia moved with her husband and two children from El Salvador to the UK four years ago seeking asylum. She likes to watch television, listen to music, and in her free time plays tennis.

The following talk was given at the Diocese of Oxford’s Community Organizing Resource Hub Day at St. Frideswide’s Water Eaton in Milton Keynes on the 23rd of March 2024 by Nuvia Vaquerano. All speakers were asked to reflect on what it means to “go at God’s pace”. Nuvia recounted the story of her church St. Martin of Tours, Plaistow and how they have found peace and hope to move forward in light of the untimely death of Father Marco Lopes. (The following is the English translation of her talk and below that is the original Spanish.)

 

Who are we?

We are an inclusive and multilingual Anglo-Catholic parish-one family in faith made up of three congregations: English, Portuguese, and Spanish-involved in social work and community organizing to promote change. Congregants in our church come searching for intimacy with God, a way to strengthen their faith, a place to build a relational culture, and a space to connect with one another. We are all so individually different, but in Christ we are equal.

St. Martin’s is part of the Anglican Church in the Dioceses of Chelmsford based in Plaistow, East London.

Who was Father Marco and how did his work begin at St. Martin’s?

Father Marco was the vicar of St Martin’s and begin his work in September of 2019. He didn’t become vicar, however, until 2022. He did his curacy at Holy Trinity East Ham where he led the Luso-Hispana Mission serving the Portuguese and Spanish speaking communities in Newham.

Father Marco was passionate about bringing people to know Christ while fighting against injustice, inequality, and discrimination.

Father Marco used community organizing to instigate many new activities at St Martin’s such as:

A Food Bank at the church for families facing difficulties with the increasing cost of living

English Classes

Guitar Classes

Preparing children for their first communion and confirmation

Bible Studies

Youth Groups

Pilgrimages outside of London particularly to Walsingham

He also did house and hospital visits to the sick. He supported the vulnerable in any way possible.

In a short amount of time, St Martin’s became well known, firstly for being able to maintain three congregations in the same church and secondly for its support for the community and the most vulnerable.

But, suddenly on the morning of the 30th of January 2023, Father Marco died of a heart attack inside the church. He left the community of St Martin’s in mourning and in great pain for the huge loss of our leader who was a spark of energy and hope for our community. The death of Father Marco was a great shock for all of us who knew him and worked together with him including all of the community groups in Newham. It was under his charismatic leadership that the church of St Martin’s transformed into an extraordinary trilingual church with three prosperous congregations worshiping in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.

His friends and colleagues testified that in the relatively short time he was with us, he demonstrated what it is to be a pastor and a brilliant leader. He was a dear friend and respected by many for his good sense of humor. He was a man utterly dedicated to his job as a missionary for Christ here on Earth.

His passions for social justice, diversity, the integration of migrants into the community and society at large, and interreligious dialogue were an inspiration to all and a light of hope in a world filled with injustice and struggle. He was a visionary tirelessly striving to make Newham a place of welcome and safety for all. And for this he will never be forgotten. His arduous labor and the common good of the community were our sparks of light and hope that lifted us up to find strength amidst his loss to continue his community work at St. Martin’s.

For the parish community his death was devastating news. It was hard to believe as the night before we were all together celebrating his 50th birthday.

Difficult times are an inevitable part of life and can shake our faith and hope. However, in these circumstances it is that very faith and hope in God that are an ever-flowing fountain of support and consolation that can truly carry us to a sense of peace in these critical moments.

Throughout history, peace has been and continues to be one of the most important ingredients that a community needs to be happy and find inner satisfaction. However, the world seems to have an incorrect notion of what true peace is. They confuse it with tranquility or the absence of aggression.

Peace isn’t the absence of problems rather the presence of God in these difficult times. Having faith and trusting that there is someone all powerful that is walking at our side and is working in our favor in our difficult situation so that everything turns out okay. This powerful being is God.

But how has the community of St. Martin’s begun to reignite this spark of peace and hope after Father Marco’s death?

The community at St. Martin’s entered a time of mourning for about three months during the burial and funeral of Father Marco. After the funeral, the community of St Martin’s began to work on having 121 conversations with every member of the three congregations. The first round of 121s focused on asking how people would like to commemorate Father Marco and what they hoped for the future of the church.

As a result, there were a variety of answers. The most salient were that Father Marco be remembered as a man of faith that worked for the common good of the church, the neighborhood and for the most vulnerable and that he was always fighting for social justice. They wanted to have a memorial created in his honor. In relation to what they wanted for the future of the church, they hoped that the church would keep up the work that Marco began.

After that we did a second round of 121s to understand what qualities people wanted in the new priest and what the church would focus on.

They wanted to begin opening the church little by little by restarting some of the activities that had been suspended due to Father Marco’s passing. They wanted to focus on recruiting a new priest for the parish that would be charismatic, have a good sense of humor and wanted to embrace all three communities in the church.

What were the pillars of peace and hope for the community of St Martin’s in these difficult times?

1. Hold onto the promises of God

The Scriptures are full of the promises that God made to those that trust in Him. In difficult times, holding onto these promises reminds us that God is with us every step of the way. Remembering God’s promises allows us to strengthen our faith and keep alive the hope in our hearts amidst the storm.

God reminds us of his promise:

Psalm 46:1-2

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

As we read the Word, we must recognize that the peace of the world is different than God’s peace. The peace of the world is based on external circumstances. 

2. Pray

Prayer is a fundamental part of Christian communal life that helped us as a community to overcome and maintain peace and hope when we lost our leader, Father Marco. Prayer allows us to communicate with God, strengthen our faith, and transform our personal and communal life as believers.

3. Maintain perspective

In the middle of a storm, it is easy to lose perspective and focus only on the problems at hand. However, maintaining perspective and remembering that God has control in all situations, we can find the direction and peace we are searching for. We must trust that God has a plan for our lives and our communities and that everything happens according to his will.

Six months after we gathered the results of all the 121s that we had the following occurred:

As a first step, the construction has begun on the memorial for Father Marco in the church garden.

The second step was a remembrance mass on the first anniversary of his death where the community of Newham awarded Father Marco a prize posthumously to recognize his work.

The third step is that the church is finalizing the selection process of a new priest. We are just in the final details of his arrival.

In relation to the church, we are resuming activities with the opening of the food bank, but this time in the form of a food pantry, new English classes, youth groups, Bible studies and a new listening campaign with asylum seekers.

Conclusion

To conclude, I can only say that the adversities of life are tests of our peace and hope and that we can only overcome them with the support and grace of the love of God, the divine promises that God made for all of us, remembering that there is a divine peaceful, loving hopeful plan for each situation and remembering that, no matter the storm, we have a firm anchor in God’s presence. When we feel that the world is shaking under our feet, we should remember these pillars and find support in them that they strengthen our faith, help us find peace and hope in order to continue forward. The peace and faithfulness of God is your shield and strength in adversity.

Life does not end with death. It is then that true life begins for Christians because we are a wayfarer church walking towards our encounter with the Lord.

Quiénes somos  

Somos una parroquia anglo católica inclusiva y multilingüe, una familia de fe de tres congregaciones inglesa, portuguesa y española, involucrada en el trabajo social y organización comunitaria para promover cambios, donde los congregados buscan intimidad con Dios, fortalecer su fe, realizar cultura relacional, conectarse entre sí, en donde todos somos diferentes pero iguales ante Cristo.

 St Martin’s es parte de la Iglesia de Inglaterra en la Diócesis de Chelmsford, Con sede en Plaistow al Este de Londres.

Quien fue padre Marco y como inicio su trabajo en St Martin’s 

Padre Marco fue vicario de ST Martin’s y inició su trabajo en septiembre de 2019, pero convirtiéndose en Vicario de St Martin hasta el año 2022 pero anteriormente se había desempeñado como Curador en Holy Trinity East Ham. Dirigió la Misión Luso-Hispana al servicio de las comunidades portuguesas y españolas en Newham. 

A padre marco le apasionaba acercar a las personas a Cristo y luchar contra la injusticia, la desigualdad y la discriminación.

Padre Marco utilizaba la metodología de la organización comunitaria para realizar varias actividades dentro de comunidad de St Martin’s como: 

Apoyando con Food Bank dentro de la iglesia a todas las familias con dificultades y ayudar de alguna forma con el costo de vida, clases de inglés, clases de guitarra, preparando niños con catequesis para recibir el sacramento de la primera comunión y sacramento de la confirmación, estudios bíblicos, reuniones con jóvenes y peregrinaciones fuera de Londres y especialmente la peregrinación a la virgen de Walsingham.

Hacia visita a los enfermos en casas y hospitales y ayudaba a todos aquellos más vulnerables.

St Martin’s se había convertido en poco tiempo en muy reconocido, primero por mantener tres congregaciones en la misma iglesia y segundo por su gran apoyo a la comunidad y a los más vulnerables.

Pero de repente una mañana del 30 de enero del 2023, Padre Marco fallece, de un ataque al corazón dentro de la iglesia. Quedando la comunidad de St Martin en luto y dolor ante tan grande pérdida de nuestro principal líder, quien era el faro de ánimo y esperanza de la comunidad.   La muerte de padre Marco fue un gran shock para todos los que lo conocimos y trabajamos junto a él y para muchos de los principales grupos de apoyo comunitario de Newham. En donde bajo su carismático liderazgo, la iglesia de San Martin’s se convirtió en una extraordinaria iglesia trilingüe con tres prósperas congregaciones que adoraban en español, portugués y también en inglés. 

Sus amigos y colegas testificaban que en el tiempo relativamente corto que estuvo con ellos, demostró ser un pastor y líder brillante y también fue un amigo muy querido y respetado por muchos por su buen sentido de humor. Era un hombre entregado a su trabajó como misionero de Cristo en la tierra.

Su pasión por la justicia social, la diversidad, la integración de los migrantes a la comunidad y a la sociedad y el diálogo interreligioso fue una inspiración para todos y un faro de esperanza en un mundo de mucha injusticia y lucha. Fue un visionario y sus incansables esfuerzos para hacer de Newham un lugar acogedor y seguro para todos   nunca será olvidado. Su ardua labor y el bien común de la comunidad fue nuestro faro de luz y esperanza para levantarnos y tomar fuerzas ante su pérdida y continuar con su trabajo comunitario en St Martin’s. 

Para la comunidad parroquial fue una devastadora noticia, dónde nos resultaba difícil creer, si la noche anterior habíamos estado celebrando sus 50 años.

Como vemos los tiempos difíciles son una parte inevitable dentro de la vida y pueden llegar a desafiar nuestra fe y esperanza.  Sin embargo, en estas circunstancias la fe y la esperanza en Dios son una fuente inagotable de apoyo y consuelo en nuestro camino que nos lleva a la paz y esperanza en estos momentos críticos.

A lo largo de la historia, la paz ha sido, y sigue siendo, uno de los ingredientes más importantes que las comunidades necesitan para ser feliz y sentirse satisfecha en su interior. Sin embargo, el mundo tiene una noción equivocada de lo que es la verdadera paz. La confunden con la tranquilidad o con la ausencia de agresión.

La paz no es la ausencia de problemas, sino la presencia de Dios en medio de las dificultades. Tener la fe y confianza que, en medio de las dificultades, hay alguien poderoso que camina a nuestro lado y que está trabajando en nuestra situación para que todo esté y vaya bien y ese ser poderoso se llama Dios.

Pero Como la comunidad de St Martin’s comienza a encender ese faro de paz y esperanza luego del fallecimiento de Padre Marco. 

La comunidad de St Martin’s entró en una etapa de luto durante tres meses, tiempo que duró el sepelio de padre Marco hasta el funeral de Padre Marco, posteriormente después del funeral de Padre Marco, la comunidad de St Martin’s comienza a trabajar con los 121s conversaciones, en donde el primero fue con el propósito de saber cómo le gustaría a la gente que Padre Marco fuese recordado Y qué esperaban del futuro de la iglesia.

Como resultado obtuvimos una variedad de respuestas, en donde las más sobresalientes fueron, que padre Marco fuese recordado como un hombre de fe que trabajó por el bien común de la iglesia, el vecindario y por los más vulnerables y que siempre estuvo a favor de la lucha social y que fuera recordado con un memorial en su honor. Y con relación a lo que esperaban del futuro de la iglesia pues esperaban que la iglesia continuará con el trabajo que padre Marco inició.

 

luego con el segundo 121s conversaciones fue para conocer que esperaban los miembros de la comunidad del nuevo sacerdote y en que esperaban que la iglesia se centrará.

Como respuestas de esto tuvimos que esperar que la iglesia se centrará en abrir poco las actividades que se habían estado realizando y suspendido debido al fallecimiento de padre Marco y que se preocupara por llevar un nuevo sacerdote para la comunidad y que tuviera el carisma, el humor y el deseo de abrazar las tres comunidades.

Cuáles fueron los Pilares de paz y esperanza para la comunidad de St Martin ante los tiempos difíciles 

1. Aferrarnos a las promesas de Dios.

 

Las Escrituras están llenas de promesas de Dios para aquellos que confiamos en Él. En tiempos difíciles, aferrarse a estas promesas nos recuerdan que Dios está con nosotros en cada paso del camino. Al recordar las promesas de Dios, fortalecemos nuestra fe y mantenemos viva la esperanza en el corazón en medio de las tormentas.

Dios nos recuerda su promesa y la encontramos en:

Salmo 46:1-2: «Dios es nuestro refugio y nuestra fuerza, siempre está dispuesto a ayudarnos en momentos de angustia. Por tanto, no temeremos, aunque la tierra se estremezca y los montes se deslicen al mar».

Filipenses 4:6-7

“Por nada estéis afanosos, sino sean conocidas vuestras peticiones delante de Dios en toda oración y ruego, con acción de gracias. Y la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa todo entendimiento, guardará vuestros corazones y vuestros pensamientos en Cristo Jesús.” 

Pero al leer la Palabra, debemos reconocer que la paz del mundo es diferente a la paz de Dios. La paz del mundo se basa en circunstancias externas. 

2. La oración: 

La oración es una parte fundamental de la vida cristiana y comunitaria que nos ayudó como comunidad a sobrellevar y mantener la paz y la esperanza ante la pérdida de nuestro líder padre Marco. La oración nos permite comunicarnos con Dios, fortalecer nuestra fe, transformar nuestra vida personal y comunitaria de creyentes.

3. Mantén la perspectiva

 

 En medio de la tormenta, es fácil perder la perspectiva y centrarse solo en los problemas. Sin embargo, al mantener la perspectiva y recordar que Dios tiene el control de las situaciones, podremos encontrar la dirección y la paz que buscamos. Confiar en que Dios tiene un plan para nuestra vida y de nuestras comunidades que todo sucede según su voluntad.

 Luego de 6 meses como resultado de los 121s realizados dentro de la iglesia obtuvimos: 

Cómo primer pasó, se está iniciando la construcción del memorial para recordar a padre Marco en el jardín trasero de la iglesia.

Segundo paso se realizó un homenaje en honor de su primer aniversario de su fallecimiento y la comunidad de Newham le otorgaron un premio como reconocimiento a su labor. 

Como tercer paso ya se está finalizando el proceso de elegir el nuevo sacerdote, ya se está en los últimos detalles para su llegada.

Con relación a la iglesia de St Martin’s está retomando nuevamente sus actividades con la apertura del Food Bank, pero con la modalidad de Patry Food, se han iniciado las clases de inglés, reuniones con los jóvenes, estudios bíblicos e iniciando campañas de escucha para los solicitantes de asilo.

 

 Conclusión

Para concluir puedo decir que las adversidades de la vida son pruebas de paz y esperanza y que solo podemos llegar a superarlo con la ayuda y la gracia del amor de Dios, las promesas divinas de Dios son para todos, son un testimonio de su amor y fidelidad hacia nosotros y que, en los días más oscuros, recordándonos que hay un plan divino lleno de paz, amor y esperanza para cada situación y nos recuerda que, sin importar las tempestades, tenemos un ancla firme en su presencia. Así que, cuando sintamos que el mundo se desmorona bajo nuestros pies, debemos recordarlas y apoyarnos en ellas, que nos ayudarán a fortalecer nuestra fe, a encontrar paz y esperanza y seguir adelante, sabiendo que la paz y fidelidad de Dios es tu escudo y fortaleza ante la adversidad.

Así que, la vida no termina con la muerte, es ahí donde inicia para los cristianos, porque somos una iglesia caminante y caminante al encuentro del Señor.
